Client: SPACIAL Audio (SAM VIBE project) - 2012

Status: standalone application - used locally and internationally at the moment

Description/My Tasks:
The SAM VIBE system is a standalone Windows application that caters for the
Visual Impaired. The SAM series of applications provide Hobbyists and small
organisations with the ability to broadcast their own music through the web and
ultimately managing their own Radio station from their own PC’s.

My role was to design a functional and usable interface for Visually Impaired
individuals (for SAM VIBE). Challenges included the following aspects:

  • The degree of Visual disability varies from users who are colour-blind to people with very bad vision to totally blind users
  • To accommodate color-blind users, I tried to use high-contrasts between visual elements
  • Bad-vision and Blind users reply heavily on screen readers and the accessibility of the software they use
  • To accommodate them, I placed Help text on all visual elements, which the screen readers pick up and read out loud
  • Establishing    the    visual    hierarchy    of    the    interface    design    was    very    difficult   since one cannot reduce the size of elements by much
  • I opted for a Metro-inspired UI, because it tends to focus mostly on data pixels and less on the “chrome”

The biggest concentration of existing users for this application is based in the USA and a few in Germany. In South Africa there's a limited amount of SAM VIBE enthusiasts and the company, Spacial Audio, wanted to re-design and re-think the whole application and market it to a local market. We were involved with the SA National Council for the Blind, and they provided us with willing candidates for user-testing and research.I was involved in: Writing functional specifications for all user-experience, design and business requirements. Do user research with visually-impaired individuals (from almost blind to individuals with color-blindness and sight impairments). Create final wireframes for projects. Create design Mockups to illustrate brand exposure and visual elements. User Testing. Final design implementation in Expression Blend 4.

Technologies used: Balsamiq (wireframes), Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Expression Blend 4.

FIRST ROUND OF TESTING:
The first round of designs and testing revealed that the color "red" would not be ideal for color-blind individuals, as some of them interpret this color in different shades of grey. SAM VIBE's logo was designed using red, and we needed to change this color choice.

SECOND ROUND OF DESIGNS AND TESTING:
Our initial testing and research revealed that the best color to use that will fit the whole spectrum of users would be bright green. SAM VIBE updated their marketing material and changed the logo. This color change proved to be very affective and we received positive feedback.
The SAM VIBE project launched in April 2012 and received great reviews from their user-base. This new and improved interface made it usable and easy to read.
